Acadia Tucker’s long love affair with perennial foods has produced this easy-to-understand guide to growing and harvesting them. A regenerative farmer who is deeply concerned about global warming, Tucker believes there may be no better time to plant these hardy crops.
Perennials can weather climate extremes, promote healthy soil, mitigate drought conditions, and thrive without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Many can be harvested year round. They taste good, pack lots of nutrients, and require little tending. In short, the world is a better place with more perennials in it and this book intends to get us there.
Tucker inspires action by first laying the groundwork for tending an organic, regenerative garden. She highlights the 10 steps she recommends gardeners take to help perennial foods thrive. But most of the book is dedicated to profiles of popular perennial herbs, fruit, and vegetables, with explicit instructions on how to plant, grow, and harvest them. Tucker also offers suggestions on how to store and preserve perennials.
Growing Perennial Foods is illustrated with dozens of pen ink drawings and ends with a short chapter on frequently asked questions. And since this is a field guide, each profile gives readers enough space to write in any additional notes.
While designed for gardening novices, this book is also for experienced gardeners who want to grow more resilient crops, and could use a little guidance.
Growing Perennial Foods is part of our Growing Food book series and a companion guide to Growing Good Food A Citizen’s Guide to Backyard Carbon Farming, which is also written by Acadia Tucker and set to publish in the summer of 2019.

- I really loved reading this easy to understand garden growing guide! Acadia Tucker (love that name!) lays out important advice every aspiring or even experienced gardener should know. I live north of New York City and, because of deer and squirrels, I grow my vegetables in containers on my porch, but I have never focused on the quality of the soil in the containers. After reading this book, especially a very good chapter on preparing the right soil for each type of plant, I now have an explanation as to why my crop yields have been low. I have never composted before and this book discusses how to compost and how to use compost in a garden. It inspired me to get a compost bin! I also liked the chart showing which fruits and vegetables do well in containers (I may even try to grow some blueberries this year).
The other great thing about this book is the recipes at the end of each chapter. Pretty creative stuff, and it reminds us that we're not just supposed to grow these plants, but we're supposed to enjoy eating them (putting sunflower seeds, as opposed to pine nuts, in the pesto with your home grown basil sounds like a cool idea).
Since I'm a big tomato grower (if I can keep the squirrels away), I liked the tips on how to harvest them so they keep growing new tomatoes through the season (and now I know what a peduncle is!). The recipe for roasted tomato soup sounds delicious.
I would have liked to have read more on pest control (near and dear to my heart) and seen even more fruits and vegetables discussed, but maybe those are ideas for a future book. Thanks for a great book Acadia! - This is a terrific book. It first stresses the importance of the soil to healthy and productive plants, how it all starts with the soil and then goes into the various vegetables, fruits, herbs and remedies and how best to grow them. It also includes recipes that show off the best of the plant. Especially for the neophyte, this book helps the gardener be successful from the get-go. Buy it!
- I love this book! It is a thrill for our whole family when we can grow something in our garden that we all love to eat. But as a relative novice to growing food, I've had mixed successes. This book is quickly teaching me the fundamentals and proving to be a great resource! It is easy to read, thoughtfully written and laid out. Most importantly though, it provides individual step-by-step instructions to growing all of the herbs, fruits, and vegetables our family and most people enjoy, as well as the challenges I might encounter along the way and what to do about them. There are great recipes for each of the plantings too. And, I'm gaining a better understanding of soil composition, compost, mulch, pruning, how to combat weeds, organic pest solutions, and much much more. I definitely recommend it!
- Great and easy-to-use gardening book! I don't buy many gardening books anymore, but this one is a keeper on my bookshelf. Other the past few years, I've been toying with the idea of growing more food in my garden and this easy guide gave me the incentive. The writer makes a convincing argument why we all should grow our victory gardens (think climate change, etc.), and plotting out my own garden in San Francisco now seems doable.
- Growing Perennial Foods is a wonderful introduction for the novice gardener or refresher for seasoned experts. Acadia’s bounty of knowledge comes through every page as she breaks down a selection of resilient herbs, fruits, and veggies to build harmony and soil health in any garden. She even includes common challenges and recipes for each item, as well as an FAQ section to tie up any loose ends. The book is informative, unpretentious, beautifully written with charming illustrations. A must-buy to add to your personal library or gift to others!
- As someone with whatever the opposite of a green thumb is (I kill everything I touch), this book was a godsend. Although it didn't cure me overnight, it helped me understand the various components of raising plants with their individual needs. It makes having a perennial garden seem feasible and worth reaching for. Not only does it walk you through a guide to the plant, its varieties, preferred neighbors, planting schedule, challenges you'll face, and the harvesting process, it provides delicious and simple recipes to help highlight the plant in all its glory. Accentuated by stunningly simple illustrations, the book is an absolute pleasure to read and something that I now love to have on my counter as a quick reference and source of inspiration whenever I get depressed in the bleak, barren winter.
- As someone who wants to reduce my carbon footprint and also have more success planting herbs, fruits and veggies around my garden, I truly appreciate this insightful, straightforward book. The way it's organized makes navigating the book and the subjects therein quite easy, and Tucker's recommendations and tips are clearly those made through years of hands-on experience. - If anyone wants to help with climate change...grow a victory garden and due your part. Acadia gives step by step instructions on how to accomplish this. I was particularly impressed on how to create and care for your soil. Bravo Acadia!
