Jericho Brown’s daring new book The Tradition details the normalization of evil and its history at the intersection of the past and the personal. Brown’s poetic concerns are both broad and intimate, and at their very core a distillation of the incredibly human What is safety? Who is this nation? Where does freedom truly lie? Brown makes mythical pastorals to question the terrors to which we’ve become accustomed, and to celebrate how we survive. Poems of fatherhood, legacy, blackness, queerness, worship, and trauma are propelled into stunning clarity by Brown’s mastery, and his invention of the duplex―a combination of the sonnet, the ghazal, and the blues―is testament to his formal skill. The Tradition is a cutting and necessary collection, relentless in its quest for survival while reveling in a celebration of contradiction.

The Tradition Jericho Brown Books Reviews
- This collection of poems is very underwhelming. Some might call the poems subtle, but I will call them underdeveloped. This is an issue with a lot of contemporary poetry. It tends to lack style, compelling metaphor, or an original approach to exploring a theme or idea.
The four or five duplex poems are interesting, and there are a few more stand out poems; however, this collection has a lot of filler. - Brown's poems can be simultaneously painful and mesmerizing. For all their harshness they carry with them an undercurrent of hope that is never far away, but a current that requires digging beneath the false mythologies in order to find it. Important, essential collection. Strong both technically and emotionally.
- this book is literally a work of art it was relatable it pulled every string from the beginning to end. I would highly recommend this to anyone that want life to make sense even for a little bit.
- I loved this collection and had the opportunity to meet the author briefly for a signing. He was lovely and obviously a very passionate and devoted poet. His work is thoughtful and moving. Highly recommended for lovers of poetry.
