Boystown 12 Broken Cord Boystown Mysteries edition by Marshall Thornton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • I don’t want to say much about this book but we only have one more book left until the series ends!!!! I’ve really come to love Nick. There has always been a melancholic feeling about these books and these last few have been especially sad. But they are real and I appreciate that so much more than I can say.

The mystery this time around was really good, Nick was back to doing what he does best. His personal life is still falling down around him, I feel like it has been since the beginning. Even when he is happy there is something unsettled about it all. I guess things will be tied up in the last book. I applaud Marshall Thornton because this has been one of the best series I’ve read.
  • This book just about gutted me. Boystown Mysteries continues to be a compelling series, and Nick is one of the most human characters in print today. Flawed, obsessive, in denial, confused...but, ultimately, loving and loyal and full of good intentions. What fresh hell the author will drag Nick through in the next book? I look forward to finding out, hoping that it will be the last trial he has to face, but knowing it won’t be.
  • I don't know that there's much more I can add to what's already been said by reviewers ... one reviewer stated there's only one more book left in the series (can the author really end on a 13th book?!) and that in and of itself makes me sad. I really enjoy reading about Nick's life, his loves ... as one reviewer stated, these books are routed in reality. I hope Joseph re-evaluates ... the 80s were such a difficult time for gay men and Nick has already lost a lot (and I think he's got more sorrow to go, unfortunately). I kept putting this one down and picking it back up again SPOILERS ... the mystery is good but Nick's life isn't ... I knew what was coming and just had such a difficult time reading it. A great series ... I'd compare it favorably with Joseph Hansen (only I hope Marshall ends his series a bit better ... not sure I could handle Nick on an open ended ending). Can't wait for the next one ... actually ... any of Marshall's books are always pre-orders for me.
  • Marshall Thornton is just such an amazing writer. I love this series. I am grabbed by the plot, heartbroken by the characters. He continues to further develop these characters in each entry of this series. Amazing plots. Deeply felt. And his ongoing chronicle of the AIDS crisis provides an excellent historical perspective as well. Let us never forget. Thanks, Marshall. Looking forward to your next book!
  • The whole series is wonderfully written, with excellent characters. This latest book is mysterious, heart-rending, with such great writing I read straight through. Can't wait till Nick comes back in the next book.
  • I am always thrilled when there's a new Boystown mystery. This one is no exception. You can see here the maturing of the arc, and the ends of some of the threads while things are still fresh. It feels true to Chicago. I want to do a walking tour of the places here the next time I'm there. Always a must buy for me.
  • As all previous Boystown books this was very well written. Nick is such a real life person who gives me all the feels. I can’t wait for 13
  • Another outstanding book in the Boystown series. The mystery is excellent, only got the murderer when Mr Thornton had Nick get it. Great characters. Atmosphere brings back the 80s, the bad with the good. I well remember the attitudes towards AIDS victims. People fearing going anywhere near them. I worked throughout the 80s on what was the first Infectious Disease unit, basically at that point an AIDS unit, in N NJ. Not everyone was educated about the disease, thanks to government ignorance and bigotry, thanks Reagan. I remember Rock’s announcent, and Elizabeth Taylor ‘s anger at the stupidity and cruelty of world governments. Looking forward to the next book. Hopefully less heartbreak, but this being the time period it is, not holding my breath.
